Jane Scrivner Nourishing Cleanser - Hall of Fame

A couple of weeks ago I spoke on a panel at Professional Beauty Manchester about changing trends in the industry. Jane Scrivner was on the panel with me and when I went to visit her stand I immediately honed in on her cleansing balm. The Nourishing Cleanser is a beautiful balm that contains:

Organic Jojoba Oil
Beeswax
Essential Oils of
Ylang Ylang, Elemi, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Lemongrass, Lavender, Myrrh, Sandalwood and Sweet Orange

That's it.

Who is it for?

Any skin type. The formula is nourishing without being gloopy - and nice and oily without being comedogenic.

What's good about it?

For something containing essential oils I have found this to cause no irritation whatsoever. It's incredibly gentle. It's a sophisticated formulation in that it holds as a balm, but melts slowly and luxuriously.

It removes all makeup effortlessly and is an absolute joy to use. Since I popped the lid I can't seem to pick up anything else to cleanse with in the evening. Skin is left soft and smooth and with no residue to touch. It's a finer, lighter
formulation than most.

It doesn't emulsify. It's a balm, then oil, then rinsed. Bliss.

87% organic. The remaining 13% is beeswax and essential oils that are natural.

It comes with a big, fluffy, flannel mitt - not a muslin in sight. *JAZZ HANDS*

What's not so good about it?

Not much to be honest. It's on the higher end of pricing at £43.00 for 100ml - BUT - it should last a long time and they have a 10% discount offer on your first order via their website.

If you have a spa/salon I would highly recommend you look into this range - it ticks all the boxes. Quality product, a keen eye on customer experience and driven entirely by someone who cares about the end result for the client, not the bottom line for the shareholder.

Highly, highly recommended.

As a special deal for my lovely readers they are offering an additional £5 off your first order - on top of the 10% they normally offer. Quote HIRONS007 (had to get the Bond reference in) at checkout.

  1. I must say that I need a new balm cleanser like a hole in the head, but it sounds like a good one to try especially with the cooler months/central heating combination. I like the fact that the website offers samples to buy which is always a bonus. Thanks for this.

  3. Hi Caroline.

Would you mind doing an update of your Cleansers Staple Diet post at some point in the future? I'd like to take your advice and extend my cleansing cabinet beyond Emma Hardie but don't know which ones would accompany this and which ones are just dupes?

    Thanks :-)

Some recomendations on spray hydrating toners would also be fab!

  5. Hi caroline, This question is completely irrelevant to this post but...
Im 17 years old, of dark complexion (around nw45-50 in Mac terms), and trying to fight acne and LOTS hyperpigmentation (oily skin)
So i wanted to ask wanted to ask what your thoughts of quinoderm cream were or if there is any better acne creams?
also i've heard that aha's arent very effective for people of my complexion, is that true? because i wanted to pick up the anthony glycolic facial wash you recently blogged about to try and deal with both my problems
    sorry for the hefty question
    thank you in advance:)

  6. Oooh, I've been needing to get a balm cleanser when I have the money - stuck between this and the balmology one though, now! :|a Though that mitt looks awfully tempting - something has been irritating my skin when I cleanse and that looks like it might be soft enough not to feel bad when taking off cleansers. :|a

  7. I wouldn't say a cleanser containing those essential oils is for everyone.. to be on the safe side (especially for sensitive skin) it would have to contain non fragrant plant oils. because speaking as a girl with sensitive skin.. sadly, those essential oils would irritate the hell out of my face :(

    1. Hi Claudia.

I know they read like that but they're genuinely small enough to not irritate me at all - and Cleanse & Polish sets my face on fire. To give you a comparison....! X

  8. Hi Caroline!
I am 16 years old and just off antibiotics for my acne.
It worked but now the acne is coming back (as usual), i also have extremely dry skin. (dehydrated?)
I want to change my skincare routine and start off with a cleansing balm.
But i am choosing between the Emma Hardie one or the Aromatherapy Associates.
Which one is best for my skin?
    Thanks so much

    x

    1. To be honest they're both rather thick for you. Try this one instead. Jojoba is lighter. Less likely to cause problems. X

  9. Would really appreciate some recommendations on balm cleansers at the lower end of the price scale. Rising energy bills, childcare bills and food bills and pay that hasn't gone up in 4 years has a big impact on my skincare budget. Pretty please?

Have you tried Boots Organics Balm? Also Clinique is £20 ish. And Merumaya Balm is under £20. Xx

    2. Thank you I'll try the merumaya one if you rate it. A post on skincare for stressed out busy mums of young children would really be appreciate! Am sure you can remember the days of living on not enough sleep, caffeine and adrenaline! Thank you

  12. I am addicted to cleansing balms (i already tried the lize earle's, and the Ultrasimple from lush). I dont think it's expensive, with 100ml, a product like this can last you a very long time.

This is the best way to get the make up off the face, and the ingredients are really well chosen.

(Again, sorry for my english :D)

  13. Sounds devine. Assume it being a balm that a little goes a long way?
I have really sensitive skin & need a remove all for my first cleanse. Also love the idea of the mitt!

  14. Did you manage to find out if Emma Hardie cleansing balm has been reformulated Caroline? Just wondering.....

    2. Hi can I ask why you think the Emma Hardie balm has been reformulated? I thought maybe my latest purchase of it was a wee bit different but not 100%. I was recommending my 16 year old daughter start using it, now I might need to rethink if the product has changed ingredients or quantities.

  15. I have so many cleansing balms... but I really want this and I just can't ignore a discount. Why is that???

  16. Sounds like something to tempt me off Emma Hardie! Would this be good for a morning cleanse as well? I'm unsure as to what type of cleanser (balm, milk, gel) would be best for the morning :)

  17. Hi Caroline

  18. I would love to get my hands onto this!

Caroline I want to ask a quick question, even though you are inundated with them every minute of your day!

I stopped taking evening primrose rose oil and switched to fish oil but I've been breaking out a fair bit lately and can only think this has been a big change!? Is it normal for a change in supplements to "help bring out the badness" to then to experience nice clear skin? Does that make sense? Thanks so much! Lots of love from Australia!

  22. Sounds interesting! Currently using Clinique TTDO balm and it's ok but nothing special. Want something to help acne, reactive skin and wouldn't mind a bit of a glow! Would you recommend this for acne skin? Also after a decent moisturiser if you have any recommendations?
Love your reviews and your candidness! (Is that a word??)x

    1. The Clarins one seems to be rather mild. I does not irritate my skin at all (combination, acne prone, very sensitive, broken capillaries). I'm using it twice daily for over a month now.
I tried the famous P50W (sensitive skin version) last week during a facial. Unfortunately it left me face, neck and decolette pink for the rest of the day and evening. What surprised more was the fact that for next couple of days my skin felt itchy, especially on the decolette.

    2. the Clarins one has Alcohol and allergenic fragrances in it, so no, it's not for sensitive skin. it's not even for normal skin because it irritates the skin even when you don't see it.

try Clinique's Mild Clarifying Lotion instead, it's really gentle :)

    3. Clinique's Mild Clarifying Lotion has salicylic acid in it - depends on how sensitive you are.

Kasia - try REN clarifying - lactic acid - not as strong.

  25. Hey,
Is it me or is the discount code not working? There doesn't seem to be a box for discount codes at checkout, there is only one for "voucher" codes, but when I entered HIRONS007 it didn't recognise it. Anyone else had the same problem?

  26. @Kasia - try the Clarins one. It seems to be very mild. At least it does not irritate my broken capillaries and I'm using it twice a day for over a month now. I have tried the famous P50W during a facial last week - it was not irritating per se but my skin was rather pinkish for the rest of the day and evening.,

  27. Hey Caroline,
Thanks for the recommendation; I just ordered it and it's amazing. I was wondering though, would you use this as a first or second cleanse? It makes sense as a first to get makeup off, but I'm worried about washing off all the goodness with a second cleanse. Thanks for all the advice!!!

  28. This looks very promising...I use Serious Skin care but, this looks like it would be worth trying.

  29. You know I need another balm like I need a hole in the head!! I'm even using the Charlotte Tillsbury one and it's a nice change for my face (although way more chemical heavy than most cleansers I ever use) but my face gets a nice glow after it, a little goes a long way with that also. I'm STILL lusting after Balmology and I found a great new raw/vegan/organic brand on Etsy and I'm barely denting my way through the 5 other balms in my rotation...it's a sickness! But I even bought basically the entirety of the J.S line because it all just sounds divine and really soothing and friendly to my very stressed and dehydrated skin. It just refuses to moisturise despite the 2-3L of water I feed it daily. But the medication I take to keep my body alive basically grinds my vital organs into dust 24/7 (it destroys my liver, kidneys, adrenals and pancreas - but it's the price I pay to be alive [well to be able to not be bedbound]) and so all the water I feed it doesn't really matter so I need super nurturing skincare to give it that boost.

Plus she is selling all this great flaxseed for uber cheap! I love flax, nom nom!

    xo

  30. This review lured me away from my usual EH Cleansing Balm and, my, I'm happy about it!

This is stunning and has left my combi, acne-prone skin looking luminous and feeling the softest I've ever known it. So far I seem to be getting fewer spots too. Friends and husbands have even commented on the difference.

Thanks again, Mrs Hirons - you don't help my bank balance but you do help me look awesome. :)
