Discontinuing products. Please discuss with your clients first!

Today, dear readers, I bring news of a grave nature. If this was a telegram, it would be trimmed in black.

It would seem that Darphin have taken the decision to discontinue my beloved Purifying Balm.

I don't know the reasons (I shall assume it's insanity) nor would I expect them to keep a product just because I love it (how rude).

It did lead to a conversation with Mum however, about favourite products that have fallen by the wayside courtesy of their manufacturers....

So: what products have YOU loved and lost...?

Here's a few of ours.....

Laura Mercier Sundown
NARS Ipanema brow pencil
Chantecaille Oak Brown brow pencil (old packaging - lead in new one is too soft)
Dior Self Tan for the Face (new one has shimmer - 'Hideous' - Mother)
Lancôme Flash Bronzer for the face (original) - 'new one is just NOT as good, if it's not broke, WHY do they try and fix it??' - Mother
Lancôme Primordiale - Mother will never forgive you

  1. I'm worried that the Clinique balm is being discontinued, I can't find it anywhere and one of the SA's said they're not sure if it's coming back in stock! Arghhh! xx

    2. Clinique's balm is amazing. Its a total winner and also is easily available in the states. I hope they were only out of it and not discontinuing it..

    5. I hope not but Clinique ALWAYS does this!!! They finally make an effective, timely product that people like so they discontinue it. (The original Even Better Skin Tone Corrector, Superfit foundation, just to name a few...)

  5. Face products I have been lucky thus far and haven't had anything I preferred discontinued.

BUT, my favorite perfume Roots Spirit eau de parfume by Coty was discontinued a few years ago. I had been lucky enough to find a few bottles of it on eBay, but now stock must have run out for good because I can't find it anywhere :(

Ah well, it smelled better on my mom anyway.

  12. I have this with my favourite cleanser: Shiseido The Skincare extra gentle cleaning foam
it was heaven for me, my skin was so happy for it. I searched for budget alternatives that would work on my skin too but i couldn't find anything where my skin would react good with. I kept having the dry flakes oily h-zone and acne so i finally took the step to getting a new tube again this week to find out they just stopped producing the product. THEY ARE NOT QUITTING THE WHOLE LINE BUT ONLY THIS SPECIFIC CLEANSER.
The saleswoman has given me samples of the Ibuki line because she said it was near the same but when i searched reviews at home they all said it was a pretty bad cleanser?
I'm pissed off, i want my perfect skin again, i want to have the feeling not having to wear foundation again.

  13. I have that balm lying around somewhere.. I used it twice and it broke me out (badly!) both times. so much for the purifying part, haha. well, essential oils just won't agree with my sensitive skin and you should always listen to your skin ;)

I'm really with you on the subject though... the things I most like are always being either changed or discontinued. this applies also for things like food and drinks! I hate it.

  18. Estee Lauder Maximum Coverage foundation...first they discontinued it all, then they only brought back about 3 shades. All of which are a kind of medium tan whereas before they had a good range from very pale to dark. It's madness! Their website is covered in complaints that they discontinued the two palest shades. I relied on it to cover up my rosacea easily because it's so hard to find a full coverage foundation that is pale and lasts on combo skin. May have had a bit of a breakdown when I found out haha...They did the same thing with the palest shade of normal Double Wear then brought it back after public outcry. Do they not realise there are a lot of pale people in the UK?! We don't exactly get a lot of sun. (not to mention the whole range of other shades they discontinued)

    1. why estee lauder?? ugh I assumed it was just the location I was at - the only had 2 shades. It just came out and I loved it for days you need more coverage. So sad to hear it was discontinued. . .I was going to look elsewhere at least now I know nit to waste my time.Sigh.

  21. As another commenter, my perfume, my holy grail Gloria by Cacharel doesn't exist anymore, many years ago, since then I didn't find a perfume I LOVE, ...I just recently discovered and liked Prada candy, but no staying power whatsoever!!! Very frustrating!!!!

  22. This is so annoying when it happens. Lancôme Star Bronzer in shade 01 Doré is probably the one that annoys me the most. Is that the same as the Flash Bronzer? Also the LCM range by Lancome was fantastic for my teenage skin. L'Oreal's Telescopic mascara would definitely be on this list too, and the original Boots Botanics Cleansing Balm & the gentle eye makeup remover.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They reformulated the whole Boots Botanics range, absolutely gutted. They used to do a sensitive skin calming moisturiser with mallow that was amazing, then they changed it and it made my skin irritated, red and sore. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

    2. Yes, and then kept the original prices even though they were using much cheaper ingredients. So annoying!

  23. DKNY did a red apple candy version - the bottle looked like a toffee apple & it was fabulous.. Never found it again

Otherwise I have been lucky. If Lancôme ever discontinued La vie est belle I'd never recover

  24. I am very disappointed to hear this but did expect it as I had problems trying to get it. The man from Darphin said they were having issues sourcing one/some ingredients. I wonder Caroline if you could recommend anything that is similar?

Thankyou Caroline for the hard work you put into this blog, I've never commented before just wanted to say how much your advise has helped particularly in terms of reducing dairy in my diet and taking fish oil supplements. 32. YSL under Terry Gunzburg had a primer called Tient Parfait in apricot. I never used it as a primer but as an extra something after moisturizer - actually this is how every woman in France used it. And it was absolutely the bomb - gave me skin like a young girl... It was so awesome & made me look so peaches & cream. Of course it's been discontinued - dang! So has the YSL oil control primer - another outstanding product.

My other loss has been Benefit's Georgia boxed powder - before all of this Chanel les Beiges & hourglass ambient powder nonsense there was Georgia, which was another peachy toned product that gave skin the most delicious glow. I really wish they'd bring this back, it was the original gangster of glory setting powders.

  37. Dior Brightlight loose powder (with the white lid) - was a lovely powder which had a very slight shimmer and soft focus effect. The new version is pink (rather than apricot), contains talc, and gives a rather ordinary finish.

  38. I haven't tried the Darphin purifying balm, but I would recommend Ole Henriksen invigorating night gel if you're on the lookout for an exfoliating and break out-busting night treatment (contains glycolic and lactic acid and does not irritate). Pop some moisturizer/night cream on top if you're dry/dehydrated. You'll wake up with glowing skin, and after a few weeks less congestion and a more even skin tone.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Love that Ole Henriksen. . really made my skin glow after putting it on overnight. Wake up to such nice, clear skin! I cried the day I dropped that jar on my floor and the gel flew all over the place, coating walls and all, never to be used again. It was literally empty when I picked up the jar. It still pains me. I wish they would think of a different way to package something that is so light and fluid. Haven't had the time to go back and buy another one, but will soon.

    3. 3RD!! Please, please do a post with your mum or perhaps how to change your routine as an older lady for example - what should be added? anything taken away? is the cleanser you used at 45 ok at 55 and so on? Is there anything you can do to prevent sagging skin? I find so many products that are aimed at "mature women" (and I hate that term! was I immature a year before and now suddenly became mature? Ridiculous) are really just greasier versions of the original cream the brand has with no real added benefit. This is not always the case but you know how marketing teams work. My skin is still combination so this doesn't work so well, but would love to hear your thoughts on this topic for ladies of all skin types especially the sagging bit - my worst nightmare :(

  40. I hate it when companies do that! I have a few fave products that are long gone. First is Charcoal Brown eyeliner from Clinique. That was my go to base for a smokey eye. I haven't found a replacement for it :( Next is Powder Flage from Benefit. I thought it was one of their best sellers. Lastly is a straightening cream from Framesi called Biogenol. It was the best product to straighten my curls with. I don't know why companies do it to us! Another thing I hate is when a whole product line is discontinued in a country. For example, Bourjois and Shu Uemera are no longer available in store in the USA. I have to physically see a makeup product before purchase.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is the Darphin Purifying Balm different than the Darphin Aromatic Cleansing Balm? Hate that one. If they discontinued it, I wouldn't blink. It leaves a sticky residue that makes my face feel like it has a wax coating. Much prefer cleansing oils.

  42. Christian Dior Midnight Poison - my favourite perfume ever: GONE!

  43. I have 2 holy grails that were continued long ago but it still hurts....

    1) Kiehl's leave-in Conditioner with Coconut Oil. Absolutely the best product I've ever used for my long hair. Their new leave-ins don't hold a candle.

    2) the W10 colour in MAC foundations. They got rid of the entire W cool tone line (yes I know that call that "warm" - *eye roll*) because and this is an exact quote from someone at the counter, "we've decided to go with an Asian aesthetic. Everybody looks better with something warm on their skin". Ah, not someone with cool toned skin. The colour was an exact match of my skin tone and while I've got something close now, it took years to find even that. The NW line is way too yellow/orange for me.

*sigh* why do they do this???

  51. Totally unrelated to this post (sorry!), but I was pondering over some skincare questions and I figured they might be some nice future blog post ideas:
    * You did a post about when / how to the cleanse and moisturize in the evening - maybe something similar for day when you don't leave until the evening (do I cleanse when I get up? Do I cleanse again before putting on make up?) or for days you spend at home entirely (typical morning and evening cleanse? I'm sure you can spice things up for the better)
    * Stupid question: is it okay to use different masks right after each other (eg. cleansing mask, then moisturizing mask)

Again, apologies that this has nothing to do with this post!
    Have a nice weekend :)

    Nars Tobago lipstick.
Guerlain's Parure Gold liquid foundation. Water resistant, doesn't irritate, lasts all day. What they have now is too dewy or shimmery. I can add shimmer if I'd like, but I can't take it away.
Lancome's Mille et un Roses perfume.

  60. Grr... I know this feeling. I've just been informed that a recent favorite of mine Dr. Jart+ V7 VitaLaser2.1 is permanently out of stock at Sephora, and is nary impossible to find elsewhere. Avibon is also discontinued, which has been on my list of "things I really want more than a puppy" for nearly a year.

Then there's MAC Creamsheen in Lune... a product that hasn't been available in ages and it still makes me sad. Since I brought up MAC, the pigments in Pink Opal and Fairylight (two fan favorites) have been discontinued for a long time. Also Georgia Peach from Benefit was one of my favorite brightening powders, and one of the few peachy tones that made my ghastly pale skin look awake.

Does anyone have any recommendations for dupes on the skincare balms I mentioned above? I failed to stock up and now I need new favorite things.

And, Rouge Dior Creme de Gloss in 341 (Creamy Almond) This is/was without a doubt the best lipgloss ever - the most perfect shade of peachy pink that goes with everything and has proved to be utterly unique(believe me, I've looked EVERYWHERE for a swap!) and the most fabulous "somewhere between a gloss and a lipstick" texture - I will never forgive them for discontinuing it! 71. Bobbi Brown seem to have changed the formula to their Creamy Eyeliners. They used to be perfect, now they are way too dark and soft and very difficult to blend. Again, if not broke, why fix it?

  72. Lancôme did a perfume called Climat that I begged for as a Christmas present as a teenager (late 80's) it had a navy blue lid. Never understood why they discontinued that one. Never found anything that smelled like it

    1. yes this is a very late reply haha but oh my GOD......climat was one of my favourite perfumes all those years ago. i had always been searching fruitlessly for this discontinued scent. those i bought from amazon smelled "off"

anyway, i read on the internet that there was a somewhat similar scent - amouage, which i got my hands on. and you know what? it isn't the same as climat but it is really quite similar. ended up loving it too....and bought it. it costs a pretty penny though. BUT - it still isnt climat!!

  73. WHATTTT?!?!?! Noooooooooo WHY OH WHY MUST THEY DO THIS. Darphin, you have broken our hearts.

  74. My heart literally skipped a beat. I love Darphins purifying balm to pieces. Ive tried everything on Earth and this is the only thing that really helps with my acne. You have a massive breakout, you massage this, leave it overnight and then wake up with perfect skin.

Im hurrying to my pharmacy to get as many jars as possible, but please, Caroline, help us find

  76. Bourjois fleur de lotus shower gel, my favourite ever, and the fabulous Stéphane Marais's MU brand.

  77. Clinique Gentle Light Powder! The assistants say they've had so many complaints about this one! Also they did a scrub/mask years ago that was brilliant and no one could understand why it was discontinued as it was very popular. Estée Lauder Rose Refining Mask. Joe Malone Tuberose. Estée Lauder/Tom Ford Youth Dew Amber Nude.

  78. Hi, I would love to know the history of how you got into the industry, and what decisions brought you there.

  79. Such a good post, I totally agree... especially if it is a skincare product you know you can rely on!

  80. Lancôme Vinefit Cool Gel. Such a lovely, light, fresh, cooling moisturiser for oily/combination skin.

    1. I LOVED this one as well. Used it in my early 20s..... maybe it won't work with my skin now, but I still search for it now and then. Today, I've resorted to trying to find the ingredients so I can try to replicate it myself at home - minus all the fancy stuff of course!

  81. Fear not...Darphin aren't discontinuing the purifying balm. I emailed them - they said it should be back in stock end Nov

  82. Look at all the comments! Can I be annoyed that I missed out on even trying chanel's prolumiere foundation? Probably not. However I was devastated when I learnt no 7s original self warming face mask was out of production after id just finished a sampke. Likewise annoyed that garnier pure no longer seem to sell their self warming mask in tubes - you get them in sachets with far more product than needed for one use but it's too messy to save for next time... tsk. Still trying to find another mask with the same effect n nothing quite lives up. Not even the sachets!

  83. I called Darphin today and was told they are discontinuing the renewing balm not the purifying! Hope that is correct.

  84. Biotherm Aquaradiance Foundation. It was the best for very dry skin. I will never get over this, or find a replacement. I don't get it. WHY BIOTHERM??

  85. M- Lab skincare - being discontinued end of this year (sob) - still available on skinstore but when you know at some point your favourite cream is going to become unavailable stocking up seems like delaying the inevitable. This was the HG for early ageing signs and gave me a glow like nothing else. - let the search recommence! BUT I have (after reading this blog) started with the PIXI glow tonic and so far very impressed.

Other than M-Lab the loss of the original Erno Laszlo products (in the marble effect packaging) was the equivalent of changing Chanel No5 and putting it in a naff bottle. Serious mistake. I second the loss of the original Vidal Sassoon shampoo and conditioner that smelt of marzipan - nearest is Adevas Clove.....Estee Lauder Herbal Hair Pack and Almond Clay Pack were again all time classics - they even brought the Hair Pack back after a customer campaign - so it is possible to influence the corporate powers that be.....

  86. I spoke to customer services this week the balm is not being discontinued

  87. What about Estée Lauder Future Perfect, Time Zone, Time Zone Eyes, 100%, Skin Perfecting Lotion? Where have all these fantastic products gone!? These at least contained real actives in much higher concentration than what you can find on the market today! Time Zone had among others 10.4% Algae Extract.
I also miss Rose Refining Mask from EL.
