The Body Shop Nutriganics Softening Cleansing Gel

How I missed this sitting on the shelf of The Body Shop until recently I do not know. It's right up my alley.

What is it?
'Smoothing, refreshing gel-to-oil cleanser'

What's in it?
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Emollient), Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil (Hair & Skin Conditioning Agent), Aqua (Solvent/Diluent), Glycerin (Humectant), Sucrose Laurate (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Sucrose Palmitate (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil (Emollient), Benzyl Alcohol (Preservative), Salicylic Acid (Preservative/Hair Conditioner), Limonene (Fragrance Ingredient), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Skin Conditioning Agent), Citral (Fragrance Ingredient), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil (Fragrance Ingredient), Citronellol (Fragrance Ingredient), Arginine (Skin Conditioning Agent), Buddleja Davidii Extract (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Thymus Vulgaris Extract (Natural Additive), Malva Sylvestris Flower Extract (Natural Additive), Foeniculum Vulgare Oil (Fragrance/Essential Oil), Citrus Nobilis Peel Oil (Fragrance Ingredient), Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract (Natural Additive), Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil (Fragrant Essential Oil), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel Oil (Fragrance Component), Sodium Benzoate (Preservative), Thymus Vulgaris Oil (Fragrance/Essential Oil), Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Rosa Damascena Flower Oil (Fragrance Ingredient).

Possible allergy/acne triggers?
Essential oils
Benzyl alcohol

What's not in it?
Parabens
Mineral oil
Shea butter

Who is it for?
Baffling. It says 'first signs of ageing'. But it's a cleansing balm.
In theory, anyone. We're all ageing.
In reality, if you are severely acnaic you may need to rub too hard to get this off. Try a sample or try it instore if you can...
Good for everyone else. Gym-goers may like it as a post-workout cleanse, it's oily enough to give your skin back some moisture retention, but not greasy enough to stop your skin sweating glowing post-workout.

What's good/not so good about it?
It's a perfectly good affordable balm cleanser that I use as a morning cleanser. May sound weird, but it doesn't give me quite enough 'grease' to remove my full makeup face - Camomile is Queen for that - and it can make my eyes a tad blurry - so I prefer it in the AM when I'm not removing eye makeup.
It's great as a morning cleanse that leaves the skin comfortable and not tight. And you need the smallest amount so don't squeeze too much out on your first go. Grip not slip.
Certified organic for those of you that care about these things.

How do you use it?
Apply to dry skin and massage in. My advice is to remove with a flannel, not water, as it says on the bottle. If you have spots and are removing this just by splashing, you're more than likely to have residue and that could lead to more spots - so use a washcloth and make sure it's all off.

Nutriganics Softening Cleansing Gel is a bargainous £10.00 and available at all TBS stores and online at: www.thebodyshop.co.uk

    1. Hi Caroline. In a you tube video you said that body shop will not be discontinuing this product... But I can't find it on their website :(. Do u have any update on it please? I would like to give it a try as a second cleanse as I'm about to finish my 5th tub of Emma hardie lol. Or should I rather go for oskia renaissance gel? Thank u xx

    2. I'm on my 4th repurchase of this but can't find it anywhere....:-) Please don't say they discontinued it! Caroline, can you help?? I love it!

  2. Thanks Caroline. Just bought this yesterday along with the camomile oil as make up removers. Having terrible trouble with my skin after coming off the pill 4 months ago :( Just bought some of the Lion Heart Omega 3 Oil after you recommend it so I'm hoping that will help my skin. I also bought Liquid Gold.
Love your blog & advice, it's my first port of call whenever I have questions or need recommendations
    Thank You!

    1. Thank you, me too! I'm pretty sorted in terms of cleansers & toner but I always struggling with the moisturiser AM & PM. I just never know what to go for and more often than not make the wrong choice. Can you recommend a good morning & evening moisturiser? I'm 32, probably combination/dehydrated, I always get confused. Any help would be a life saver, bad skin is so depressing, it has really been getting me down. Thanks so much Caroline.

  3. Will have to put it on my 2016 shopping list. Damn this no buy. Ugh. Sounds perfect for the price. Boots own do a similar cleansing balm for around £8/9 but it leaves a greasy residue even when removing with a flannel so I have to use another cleanser after even if I'm not removing makeup.

  5. Thanks for the reveiw Caroline. Really hoping you can answe this question for me, I have oily skin, large pores. I have the dermalogica overnight cleAring gel and noticed it contains 2% salicylic acid, would this be a good use to use all over as spots not so much an issue but was thinking could get the benefits of the salicylic acid? X

  7. Funnily enough I bought this TODAY whilst in TBS buying the pomegranate cleanser on your recommendation. Glad this one is Caroline approved too :-)

  8. Caroline, how does this compare to the Oskia cleansing gel please? Would love to find a more budget friendly alternative :)

  9. Just went into my local Body Shop and they are actually not carrying the line anymore so I got two of these cleansers for $5 each! Went on a bit of a ramble to sales associate about how I am an oil cleanser...hah. I'm in Canada, so other Canadians be sure to check out your local shop in case they are ditching the line too! :)

    2. You ever notice that when Caroline likes something from the Body Shop it's all sold out online! It's ok. I love these affordable products!

    3. I went in yesterday to one here in Ottawa and the sales associate said they're discontinuing it. She said she's hoping they would just revamp the packaging...one can only hope!

  10. Such a fantastic balm cleanser and a great price this is defiantly one that will be staying in my skincare arsenal .

  11. I find it leaves my skin incredibly tight and flaky, a problem I didn't have with my previous gel-to-milk cleanser (Rituals sensational soft cleanser) which is as effective, but feels gentler and doesn't sting the eyes.
I have sensitive, dehydrated skin prone to clogged pores/bumps and the odd painful spot, so I steer clear of shea butter, but I usually use cleansing balms or oils. This is a good cleanser for traveling, but maybe not the best if you have a similar skin type to mine.

  12. Think I will have to try this one. I have the serum in this range and really like it. I do have the toner as well - ok but not loving it. If any of you have TBS outlet store near you it's always worth a little trip as it has the same products as the main stores but if you buy 2+ items you get 35%+ off the total price (a nail file at £2 counts and will get you the discount - brilliant)!

  13. when I went to look at this at the store, the lady wanted me to look at other cleansers more suitable for me because this one is directed at more mature ladies. It baffles me that this lady who has 6 years of experience in beauty (she told me so herself) goes so much by the book. I was like: "but it's just a cleanser that I'll wash off after one minute + it's supposedly for dry skin because mature ladies tend to have skin on the drier side? well I have dry skin too." I'm 23.

Caroline, which would you recommend to my slightly acnaic and somewhat dehydrated and dry skin: the pomegranate cream cleanser from TBS, the one above or a third one?

  15. Was told today at a U.S. TBS store that they are revamping the Nutrgenics line and renaming it Drops of Youth or something silly. The clerk wasn't even sure if this would be in the new line. It was on clearance.

  16. Sooo curious about this one, need to try it soon.

  20. Are there any cleansers out there that would be good for both me (at 41 years old with slightly oily skin and occasional breakouts) and my 13 year old with typical teen acne? I actually bought this Body Shop cleanser (waiting for it to come) but I know my daughter will not flannel off and I don't want to cause her more acne. I think I will have to return it.

    1. I haven't found that this cleanser to leave any residue at all even (on the rare occasion..) that I don't flannel off. It seems to emulsify very well and rinse off nicely.

    2. Don't return it! Use it! Make her flannel her bloody face! :)
Send her round to me. :)

  21. I have this and it is so nice to use - it's a shame the Body Shop hide some really great products behind silly names and gimmicky packaging.

  22. Why does nearly everything have salicylic acid as an ingredient? Along with it's natural form, Willow bark, BHA and it's many derivatives, it's driving me crazy. I'm sure I'm not the only person in this world who is highly allergic to this ingredient. Grrrrr.

  24. thank you for the review..I will look into this cleanser.. (anyone?) thanks again

    2. thank you millions Caroline..yeah that is possible, because I cleanse quite properly and use hot flannel to take it off, followed by acid tone and hydration toner as well..will try the balm definitely :)
have a great day and thanks for the blog I have never had such a good skin !

  25. This sounds nice! I am currently using Derma E as my main cleansers. They work well and their hydrating cleanser gets off stubborn makeup without stripping. When I run out I'll see if I can find it in the states!

  26. This is no longer available online in the US! The Body Shop at Mall of America said they pulled it, she thought they might be revamping it!! WHAT??!! WHY?!?! This is my favorite cleanser, Caroline you suggested a gel cleanser, I found one I LOVE - and now this!! Sad faced!!! Thankfully at their last sale I bought 2 more tubes! backup for the backup!

  27. Sounds really nice. Must try this one, along with the pomegranate one. Perhaps this one 1st as that's a nice suggestion to use it for the gym. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing too much cleansing with the post gym cleanse too. I may be like "Nia" skinwise so I'll have to proceed with caution but worth a try for a such good price. I love the way you list what everything is after every ingredient Caroline. So handy!

  28. I tried this cleanser a while a ago and hated it. My skin is extremely dry and every time I washed off this cleanser I felt very tight and uncomfortable! But I personally don't understand why you mention so many TBS products because they have some really crappy ingredients in their lines including horrendous amounts of fragrance and irritants.

    1. I like a lot of their products. And people need more affordable options. There are more high-end, higher % of active ingredient products out there - but they cost - significantly more....

  29. I just finished this cleanser and liked it. The only thing I didn't like is that it does'n remove eye make up properly and I wear only mascara. Dont think will be rushing back but a good budget option.

  31. Could this be used as a second cleanse?

I have dehydrated skin prone to horrible break outs as well as dryness. Love the camomille cleansing oil as a first cleanse, but I'm on the look out for a good second cleanse cleanser in the £10-15 price range. Never really found one that I genuinely love.

  32. Hmm may have go back and get this. Just had a trip to Body Shop! I got camomile cleansing balm and oil, vitamin E face wash and a free warming mask. Shoul've read this first!

  33. Grrr, this is no longer on U.S. website. It used to be there! Did they discontinue this or just remove the listing because it's out of stock? And wasn't this item already recommended, along with a few other "NUTRIGANICS" items? Thankyou for the post nonetheless.

  34. They've taken this off the UK site now too. Literally in the last week... Gutted. I loved it.

    3. It looks like everyone is having a mild panic, I'm about to run out and couldn't find it anywhere online so I'm hoping it'll come back in stock soon given your comments above! Any ideas how long this might take as we're now towards the end of September?

  37. Lovely to meet you in Birmingham this week Caroline! I asked one of the shop assistants about this gel (as I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to the Oskia!) and she swore it was discontinued (and said probably the whole nutriganics line eventually). If she was wrong I'd be very very happy! Any other alternatives to the oskia? Thanks!

  38. I love the fragrance of this and the NSPA at Asda melting gels cleansers, but my rosacean skin hates the essential oils. An even cheaper alternative without the essential oils is the new Botanics Hydration Burst Dual Action Cleanser. The base is olive oil, fractionated coconut and jojoba oils.

  39. Update - I did the skin test thing on the Body Shop website, and it was cheeky enough to recommend this gel as a product to use, even though it wasn't available! I emailed customer services to check, and they did confirm again (thanks Caroline!!) that it will be back in stores, but they just weren't sure when. Yay!
