Bio-essence Hydra Tri-Action Aqua Droplet Sleeping Beauty Mask

What is it?
'An overnight sleeping mask designed to rehydrate and firm.'
or:
an absolute must-have for anyone with dehydration i.e. most of us.

What's in it?

Possibly acne/allergy/troubling for some ingredients?
Silicones
Fragrance
Methylisothiazolinone (MI)
MI is the new 'paraben'. Not scientifically, just to give you an idea of the recent press. The EU and the FDA both say it is 100% safe for cosmetic use. Allergies are reportedly higher with MI than other preservatives. However, it is the last ingredient on the list meaning the % will be very low. If you had an issue with MI you would probably already know about it and be unable to use most shampoos, body washes and body lotions. (But you guys always want me to give you as much info as possible so there we are...  :)
Also - this product is extremely water-heavy and therefore requires a really good preservative....

What's not in it?
Everything else.
Mineral oil
Parabens
Shea
Essential oils

Tested on animals?
No

Who is it for?
Everyone, but especially dehydrated or dry skins. This would also be fine for dehydrated acne skins (most acne sufferers are demonically dehydrated). Like I said: everyone.

How do you use it?
You can either:

  • apply as a mask for overnight use
  • apply as a moisturiser during the day - put this on over your toner and under a heavier moisturiser or spf or on its own for those of you with angry acne
  • apply as a thicker mask for overnight with a double whammy - see below
  • would be amazing for flying
  • would also be brilliant for those nurses, teachers, doctors that work in really drying environments...

What's good/not so good about it?
OK so I am in love with this mask. My lifestyle, including medication (ugh), continuous travel, the weather.. pick something... means that I am dehydrated a lot of the time. You can use the best products in the world (I do) and suffer from dehydration - it's a skin condition based on lifestyle and surroundings, not a skin type based on your genes.
I always use this as a double whammy - I take everything off - makeup-wise - when I get home from the school run or around 6ish depending on my day. I then do my evening routine. On the nights that I use this, I apply a thin layer, leave it to do its thing, then before bed, give a quick spritz of something to 'reactive' it, if you will, then apply another layer.
It works beautifully. The nano technology that this uses is what you pay a fortune for in the creams that cost hundreds, not tens of pounds. I wake up with soft, rehydrated skin.
When you apply this it literally bursts open, leaving droplets of water (hyaluronic acid) on the surface of the skin, that you then pat in. This is a wipe and then pat product, not a rubbing in product.

I always describe dehydrated skin as a sponge that is being held underwater with the top exposed. The top immediately dries out. This in essence, fills the holes on the surface level of your dehydrated sponge with hyaluronic acid - something capable of holding 1000 times its own weight in water.

Similar products?
The most obvious is The Body Shop Bouncy Sleeping Mask which although similar, is not quite as easy to use.
Origins Overnight Drink Up is another dedicated nighttime product, but to my mind this is superior.

The longest named product in the world is available from CultBeauty.co.uk priced £29 for 80ml.

Also: someone left a comment recently doubting my opinion because I have 'hardly ever used any of the product in the pictures so how could I possibly tell what its like?'.
I, like nearly all bloggers, try and take pictures of everything that I plan to trial when they are new - before I use them, otherwise the product wouldn't look as nice! It doesn't always happen, sometimes I rip things open and crack on - but in most cases, just like with lipsticks, palettes etc, the picture comes first, then the trial....

  1. Ha, I aready checked it the other day after you warned us. Looks very interesting, though personally I'm a bit afraid of so many silicones so high up the the INCI list because in the past I have reacted to stuff high on silicones. Would you say the BS one is as efficient? How would you compare this to, say, the Clinique overnight mask?

  2. Thank you, Caroline! I'm always on the lookout for good moisturizing masks although I always feel like they're a treat after a crazy day rather than a staple in my routine. The ONE thing I don't have is dehydrated skin (most of the time), thank God. And don't worry about people never being satisfied. Some people write before they think. If they looked at your Instagram, they'd know better than to think you don't use the products.

  3. Caroline, I think you should check Laneige Watersleeping Pack Ex - it is a similiar product to this Bio Essence overnight mask. The Laneige one is also super hydrating and brightening dull tired skin, and I personally think it is better than the Bio Essence one. If you have a chance to try it, please let me know how you get on because then I'll decide if I should get my hand on this Bio Essence mask or not haha :-)

    2. I am the Anon who posted the comment above... I mean I'll decide if I should get my hand on the full size of Bio Essence mask.. I tried a sample of it last year and the result was not that great (but maybe I didn't use it long enough to see the result... which is why I'm wondering if I should get the full size one to use at least a month)

    3. For you ladies who used Laneige - what's the smell like? I've read some rave reviews, but a good few people mentioned that the smell is a bit hm overpowering and flower-y? Strong scents can sometimes trigger a headache in my case so I am curious what is your opinion.

No, not overpowering at all! The smell will disappear instantly once applied on skin. Honestly it smells so good and relaxing. I have been using Laneige Watersleeping Mask for more than 3 months, and it improved my skin so much. Not only it plumps my skin, it also somehow evens out my skin as well :)

    5. Just like to chip in to above though, I have tried both full jar of Laneige and Bio Essense, the later provides more watery and fresh feeling without any stickiness at all, the technology is quite unique in a sense that it totally transform into water upon contact with skin which I love... Laneige however is a tad filmy...

  5. Hi Caroline, I have read that silicone forms a film on the skin and prevents your skin from absorbing other beneficial ingredients, is there any truth in this? For this reason should a silicone based product be used last after serums etc? Would using a silicone based product regularly further dry out your skin? Thanks, I really enjoy reading your blog :-)

  6. MI has a higher reaction rate that any other preservative and many companies have been forced to remove it from leave on products. It's beyond me why a face cream would have this preservative in it, not good at all. I say stay away from this if you are applying especially to your face :(

  7. Hi Caroline-
Im off to order this now, apparently it is not available here in the US. Are you familiar the the Algenist brand? I have been using the Ultimate Anti-aging Melting Oil cleanser, and I LOVE it. It does have an off-putting scent, but once I got used to it, I sort of like it!
    Best, and thank you-

  8. Hi Caroline,

Totally love your reply above, some people will never be pleased. Already bought this product after seeing you're instagram alert on it and it was delivered today so very excited. Just one question though, how would I know if my skin is dehydrated or not? I know I have oily skin but not so sure on the dehydration part?

    Thanks

  9. Caroline, you goddess! SOME people will never be happy and SOME OTHERS of us just want to punch them in the throat for exhausting you. Don't waste your energy on them when you could be transforming those of us who hang on your every word, video, blog post, Instagram pic, etc. Thank you for all that you do. xoxo

  10. Hi Caroline - I also read the ingredients list and baulked slightly at the number of silicones in there. Do silicones actually benefit the skin in any way shape or form? I've cut silicone out of my haircare for the last 6 months, as I did research and read that it coats the hair, builds up and prevents beneficial ingredients from penetrating. Hair feels loads better now. I've also been using a silicon-heavy, expensive hand cream over the winter and it seems to do sweet FA for my skin which is crying out for moisture - it feels beautiful when I put it on but does precisely nothing for my hands. I've now moved on to something else. So I'm now wondering about facial skincare and trying to avoid it when I see it high up the ingredients list. I know silicones make products feel lovely and smooth, velvety etc etc. but what do they actually do to benefit the skin?

  11. I ordered this after your instagram post saying buy it if you have skin. It's just this minute been delivered by Cult Beauty and I have the whole office marveling over its water forming dropletness. Can't bloody wait to get it on my face! Thanks, Emma.

  12. What a shame. Heavy on the silicones. It would be like sleeping with vinyl on your face. Added to that the MI too. I read about MI years ago before it become a buzz word. Back then the handbooks were saying it should not be in products that are left on the skin such as moisturisers and if used in wash-off products should still be treated with caution. Sad to find it in high-end products these days.

    1. It's hardly high end. I don't understand how it's retailing for almost £30! In Malaysia, it's much less than that. It's actually a drug store brand.

  14. Very much interested in a silicone FAQ and a methylisothiazolinone and parabens FAQ.
Always very much interested in your reviews...

  16. Caroline, forget about people making silly comments on what you do or don't do - like the pictures example. YOU ARE DOING GREAT.
A quick one: does The Body Shop Bouncy Sleeping Mask have the same nano technology you are talking about for this one? not quite there? in terms of results, is it similar?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Caroline, do you know if the fragrance in it is the same as what's in the Bio-Essence Hydra Tri-Action Moisturising Gel? I have that one, and whilst it's nice, the fragrance is far too strong for my face to tolerate. It wasn't a waste, as I can still use it on my décolleté, but I don't bother putting masks farther than my throat because it's only my face that gets truly dehydrated! So if they use the same scent across the line, as many brands do, then it's totally useless for me. :-(

  18. Disappointed to see this site descend into name calling. Come on girls and you CH. Gillian was wrong to be so rude but to start swearing at her...

    1. Hi Anon. I would agree with you completely under normal circumstances. This is literally the first time in 5 years of blogging I've sworn at anyone. I guess we all have our limits. And mine were reached.
I've never spoken to anyone like that in my life before now....
      I won't be a hypocrite and say I regret it though. I don't. Sorry. X

  19. We all have our limits, fair enough. But as the Queen of us all on this site (!), people do tend to copy and lots jumped on the band wagon which changed the vibe from a place where people are free to comment to somewhere that is openly hostile to just one person.

  20. Hi Caroline, sorry if this is a repeat comment from me, I can't tell if I'm doing this right lol. I was just wondering what your
"when I get home" routine is? I have seen your morning and night routines, but I never know what to do when I get home and remove my make up, do I do my night routine once when I get home and again right before I go to sleep?

  23. If any of you have friends in Singapore/Malaysia/Hong Kong, ask them to get it for you! Bioessence is a common drugstore brand and retails for half the UK price.

  24. Oh dear. I somehow managed to miss the earlier comments mentioned above (I'm not sure how as I am on here a few times a day at the moment 😕 ). I just wanted to say that I don't think it's anyone's place to judge or pass comment on your actions / words. You give your time and your opinions and we are all big enough and ugly enough to take from that what we choose, people don't need to be negative, no matter what. And it's difficult never to respond when people do choose to be rude. I just hope that the minority don't get to you and ruin it for the rest of us because there is no one else like you, doing what you are doing, which is just giving their honest opinion. I understand if you don't want to publish anymore on this topic but I just wanted u to know.

  27. I loved the initially feel of this product, but unfortunately the next morning I had a swollen face and then itchy sand paper type. I'm not usually so sensitive but something didn't agree with me, I tried it a month later just to test it was this and nothing else that had upset my skin same result - now in the pile "mum might like this" maybe it was the silicone? X
