Dehydration week - Chanel Hydra Beauty Range

What is it?
'An innovative range of moisturisers, HYDRA BEAUTY responds to the hydration needs of every woman, regardless of age or skin concern.'

Pretty self-explanatory, although I would remember that men also get dehydrated..!

Who is it for?
Dehydrated skins - all ages.

What’s in it?
I have three different versions - but only the inci for two that I had the foresight to snap pictures of knowing how hard (impossible) it is to get ingredients online from a lot of brands, of which Chanel is one. So excuse the photography but it's better than nothing!

Hydra Beauty Micro Serum:

Hydra Beauty Nutrition:

Possibly acne/allergy/troubling for some ingredients?
fragrance
shea butter

Natural? Organic? Man made? Vegan?
man made with a sprinkling of natural

Tested on animals/sold in China?
No/Yes

What's not in it?
mineral oil
parabens

How do you use it?/Where to use in your routine?
So the serum is a couple of pumps into the hand and then spread over the face after toning and under moisturiser.
The moisturisers are self-explanatory, but I tend to use about a 5p size (dime) and use on top of serums/oils etc.

What’s good about it?
I really enjoy using this range. All three products that I have tried are really lovely to apply, they absorb beautifully and they do the job well.
The Micro Serum is particularly 'wet', if you know what I mean, and like I said before, absorbs well, immediately soothes any tight feeling without the greasy feeling that some hydrating serums can leave. I would say it's suitable for all skin types.
The Hydra Beauty Creme is the one aimed at a normal/combination skin and probably best suited to daytime use as it's great under makeup. This is light, yet hydrating and more than enough for me on a normal day.
The Nutrition cream is the serious contender for those of you with dehydrated and dry skin. It's thick, luscious and feels like a comfort blanket. For that reason, I use it when I'm not leaving the house or in the evenings, sometimes after using retinols, sometimes on its own.
The effect the next day is good. Skin is soft, hydrated and looks rested.

Tip: if you are dehydrated, buy a silk pillowcase. Seriously. Your cream actually has the time to stay on your face and absorb, it doesn't end up on your pillow. Nobody needs an expensive cream-laden pillowcase!

What’s not so good about it?
If you don't like fragrance in product you probably won't like this, I must say though, if you haven't looked at Chanel skincare in a while, go and have a smell. This is a world away from the 'peachy' smells they were doing around ten years ago. I didn't get on with them but this is softer and much more subtle.

The Chanel Hydra Range is available from FeelUnique.com in the UK and Nordstrom.com in the US, but it is out of stock a LOT. You may have to search it out.

  1. hi caroline,

  2. Dear Caroline - this is really just a thank you note to say how grateful I am to have your expert advice to rely upon, and the offers you're able to extend to us by virtue of your standing in the industry. I picked up KS's Clinic-to-Go pads during the generous HIRONS promotion :) and just today also grabbed Deep Tissue Repair and Line Release Eye (non-HIRONS promo but still pretty good!). If I'm honest, I don't know that I'd ever spend that kind of money on my skin without being able to rely on your expertly qualified, no bs opinion - not because it's not worth the investment to me, but because it's so hard to know what to choose. Thank you so, so much!

  4. Hi Caroline, I am not sure if my skin is dry, dehydrated or something else! I suffer from fairly constant flakiness around the chin/mouth which I believe is associated with my prescription retinol that I use for acne. I thought if I toughed it out my skin would eventually stop flaking but not that case, it's been months. What gives? Is there anything I can do? Thank you!

  5. Hi Caroline I love all your posts! Just wondering if could you encourage selfridges to stock more of the kypris range? I'm dying to try some but it keeps selling out xox

  6. Hi Caroline,, thanks for this post I definitely needed this! I have been looking for a good moisturiser to go under my make up in the morning! And I am so dehydrated from the air con at work!

  7. But... WHY THE ALCOHOL? In a range for dehydrated skin?? Nothing makes my skin worse than alcohol - and I bought the regular Hydralife serum without realizing it had alcohol in it. After 3 days of using it, my cheeks were like sandpaper :(
Glad to see the micro-serum has none though.

    1. I'm not an expert but... I'm sensitive to alcohol too. The ingredient cetearyl alcohol is different from regular denatured alcohol. I've read that it's a fatty alcohol, used as a thickener or an emulsifier to help a product spread. It's non-irritating -- but of course anyone can be sensitive to any ingredient. I just thought I'd share this with you because this information helped me reconsider products I was overlooking due to my thinking that all alcohols are the same. :)

    2. hi. i confirm that cetearyl alcohol is a thickener. it's not even liquid. it's made of little piece of wax-like material and it is used to make a cream less liquid. almost every cream contains a thickener and cetearyl alcohol is one of the best. it' s reduced the white "tail" that creams leave on your face when you start to massage them

  8. As far as the silk pillow case-

How often do you change it/ wash it? I find that I only get about two days, four if I'm truly pushing it out of my pillow case. Since I rotate sides to keep from sleeping on the same side more than once otherwise I wake up with lovely breakouts mostly on my cheeks. I could obviously continue to do this with the silk pillowcase but they are more expensive..

  9. I have had a few samples of the Hydra Serum and also the Hydra Crème and have to say, this serum is amazing! I have a couple of other hydrating serums open at the moment, but as soon as I get through one (or a couple) I am straight down to the Chanel counter for this serum.

  13. The line always intrigued me, but it's way out of my student budget right now. The mugginess during the day causes excess oil which results in pimples and clogged pores (stubborn blackheads), but during the night it's chilly which results in my cheeks being as dry as the sahara w/ a terrible irritated/itchy feeling. I usually use PTR Cucumber & PTR Rose Repair and they've really been helping with the irritation and dehydration.

  14. Ooooh... I got some generous samples of this line with a Chanel purchase recently, I'm glad to see it received the Hirons seal of approval! The dry heat in my apartment always dries out my skin, so this will be perfect for winter. ~Susanne xoxo

  15. I tried a sample of the Hydra Beauty Micro serum back in late September, early October so when the weather started to get colder and (in a few applications) it really helped with my dry areas without being to thick for the rest of my face because it still is a light serum, I take note for the silk pillowcase though ! Now I really want to try the whole range, maybe for Christmas...
