The Cult Beauty Box 'How-To'

I had a lot of requests for more information on the products in the box and what skins they are suitable/not suitable for so thought a quick debrief may prove helpful before the box goes on sale, and while the waitlist is still open.

Sonya Dakar Eye Wash - £32.00
This was one of my favourite surprises of this year so far. Super-light in texture, it works extremely quickly but more importantly, gently, in the very delicate eye area. It removes all makeup effortlessly with one pump. Use in the evening if wearing makeup,  as a first cleanse, just on the eye area. A little goes a very long way.

MV Organic Skincare Gentle Cream Cleanser - £35.50
MV is one of the loveliest organic brands on the market and this cleanser is perfect for both ’normal’ skins and those that sometimes need something calming as well as cleansing.  It’s gentle and non-foaming so causes no further damage if your skin is even slightly reactive. It’s great as either a morning cleanse or a second cleanse in the evening.

Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser - £54.00
This defines the term 'multi-tasker’ having such a wide range of uses that it is one to grab if you can only take one. It works as a morning cleanse, an evening first OR second cleanse and is also an eye makeup
remover. If your skin is playing up, feels tight, hot or red, if it’s even a little annoyed with you, this should be your first choice from the box. This is your ‘when in doubt’ cleanser. A no-brainer.

Oskia Micro Exfoliating Balm - £48.00
Not everyone likes acids, and even those of us that love them occasionally want something that goes a step further and physically exfoliates. This balm uses MSM and silica beads - not a microbead in sight - to give a granular, gentle, exfoliation, It also smells beautiful, making the entire process much more satisfying.
Use twice a week as needed, am or pm.

Pixi Nourishing Cleansing Balm - £18.00
Sometimes life takes over and you want one product that will just ‘do the job’ in the evenings. This is the Pixi balm for me. Used in the evening, it destroys makeup and spf and is a quicker, better alternative if you would normally grab a wipe and be done with it. Used in the mornings, it’s the perfect cleanse if your skin is feeling a little dry or dehydrated.

Dr Gross Ferulic & Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Peel Pads x 8 - £38.50
These are still fairly new to market and I’m thrilled that Dr Gross agreed to let me have them in this box. It takes the ‘acid toning’ stage a step further by including ferulic acid and retinol to help accelerate cell renewal, aid pigmentation and an even skin tone. I noticed a difference with these after two uses. Use twice a week in the evening, follow with your usual routine. Fab.

May Lindstrom The Jasmine Garden Facials Spray - £48.00
This is the product that elevates the second toning stage from a ‘spritz’ to a must-have. Jasmine Garden is a phenomenal mix of silver, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang and vanilla that not only engulfs the senses and soothes the skin but seals in hydration whether used after acids or during the day as a top-up spritz. Beautiful.

Value of box: £274.00
RRP of box: £175.00

  1. Hi Caroline!
Would the Dr Gross pads be good for a young acneic skin? I'm only 20 so I thought of maybe giving them to my mom but since they have retinol I thought maybe I could use them since I have thick, oily, acne prone skin (as in I used to be perscribed retinols by the dermatologist but don't use those anymore because they didn't help on the long run since they dried me out)

    2. Ok thanks! And thank you for the box also, I love cleansers!

  2. I really cant justify buying so many cleansers at the moment, there are still so many living in my cupboard unopened. But it is a lovely collection.

  3. I'm a fan of CH. I like your personality and sense of humor. I am excited for your collab with CB. However (everyone knew "however" is coming), I don't know how I feel about it.

I bought all your boxes blindly, because I trust you and it is a great chance for me to try something that is usually not within my budjet. With this one, my common sense wakes up and shows its opinion and let me share it.

1.Sonya Dakar Eye Wash - £32.00 -- why Caroline? It is 15ml bottle for a heavy eye make up users. As one of your followers sait people don't wear too much makeup. And I have to agree. I think there are two camps: skincare lovers and makeup junkie. We are all here from the first camp I guess. I wear eye makeup, but The body shop balm or oil or any other balms or oils do remove mine perfectly. So this product is slightly(read totally) miss for me.

    2. Oskia Micro Exfoliating Balm - £48.00 -- I bet it is great but it is the repetition from the box #one. I still haven't used mine (and I'm too greedy tp gift to someone).

    3. MV Organic Skincare Gentle Cream Cleanser -- I'm 50/50 with this one too. I don't know why. Haven't opened the previouus otem from this brand too, something doesn't attract me to it.

To sum up, there are 7 products which I would never buy myself for either a)too expensive, b)no need/desire, so it is a great chance to try and splurging once. However, with the products I'm ok with and I wanting to try it is not as attractive in terms of price. I live in Canada and the exchange rate doesn't work well and some of the products are cheaper over here.

So I don't know. It is the first time, when I'm glad I have time to think before ordering. Usually I'm in where you set your approval but this one... there is a reason why in asia a digit four is not lucky one....just kidding =))

    1. I'm with you.
I really don't get why anyone would want 4 different cleansers in one box. Very unnecessary.

      Delete
    2. The only thing I think I wouldn't use much is the eye cleanser (which makes the box less valuable to me).

I don't mind the amount of cleansers... mind you, I actually am using more than 4 cleansers right now. I double cleanse each time I wash my face and use different products depending on how my skin and I feel.

I use a facial oil in the morning, and this is followed by a water-based cleanser or two. I have combination skin, and if my T-zone is terribly oily that morning, I will use a cleanser for oily skin just for that area (typically a clay cleanser), and use a more gentle cleanser for my cheeks.

In the evening, I use a cleansing balm that to me feels better for massaging my face than just oil. This is again followed by water-based cleansers as above.

As I live in the UK and the weather is currently unpredictable, I also have a cleanser for dry skin which I use after the oil cleanser / cleansing balm on those cold days when my skin looks dry.

So... my cleansing routine is pretty much "prescribe as needed" meaning I need more than just one or two cleansers. :)

    3. Anny M - Thanks for the feedback. Re the Eye MU remover - a lot of my readers were eye makeup - and I wouldn't stick a micellar water in there as it would just go against my entire last 6 years of blogging - and would be fake. I put the product in because it's brilliant.

LisaLovesOwls - no-one will ever please everyone.

      The Juggling Girl - Enjoy!

    4. If people don't like it, then don't buy it! Not everything will fit everyone.

    5. I will not purchase this box, but only because I just recently bought so many cleansing/prep items, thanks to you Caroline. Had I some money left, I would buy gladly. After years of Bioderma (which remains my first/on the go cleanse) I'm discovering both the utility and the need for multiple, thorough cleanses/cleansers. I don't think that "there are two camps: skincare lovers and makeup junkies". One can be both, I know I am, and eye make up remover is needed, IMO, as soon as you're using mascara and crayon, no need to go drag! I stocked up on my favorite ever, Talika Demaquillant Soin Des Cils, but I will eventually try Caroline's one. The box sounds lovely, I sure hope that I can buy the next one, Maybe a "Exfoliate and Sooth" one, that way we can have P50 and Blue Cocoon in it, LOL...

    6. First, I apologize that I have so many typos in my first comment.

lisalovesowls I have nothing against cleansers, it is a theme for this box, so it is ok. Even though theu last forever for me, I don't open them all at the same time, so it is ok. My "meh" was mostly about the eye stuff which is a)not necssary for me personally, b) even if it brilliant 15ml for $60 CAD no way ever! And the repetition of Oskia.

The Juggling Girl me too. I like cleansers when I'm in the mood Ieven enjoy it, I have 4 full size and about 5 travel size open at the moment. It is kust...see the comment above)))

Caroline Hirons I understand, it was rhetorical I quess.I just had a stong desire to give a feedback. My plan was to ordr it if it is still available after I wake up and it was, so I'm in. But I appreciate if you accept thefeedback for the future boxes (please please please no body care)))

[v] show by example. If you don't like the comment - just don't reply))))

edwige B Blue Cocoon was in the previous box, didn't impressed me (my opinion)

      Delete
    7. edwige B if you are in the both camps - congrats you're rich! Because it is hard to afford all of the skincare with these prices and make up with similar prices. Yes, I don't understand why people would use Blue Cocoon for $160 and ELF eye shadow for $8 without knowing where and how it was made. I don't push this opinion but it is truly how I feel.

      Delete
    8. Why would anyone need 4 cleansers you ask? Oh gosh I'm totally that kind of person who needs many types of cleansers at one time, and in fact, I have like 7-8 cleansers from oil to foam to micellar queueing in my bathroom... *grinning guilty*... Logic for me is that, one, my skin is as temperamental as London weather so I need different type of cleansers to pacify my skin. Also, everyone needs a cleanser even if you don't stick to a routine, it will run out eventually... I typically finish a cleanser in one and a half month if I use the same one day & night. Thirdly, I like the idea of having choices to spice up my cleansing routine.

  4. I signed up for the wait list but I'm going to sit this one out.
It's a bit underwhelming box, to be honest.
Sad, because I was looking forward to it very much.

  5. Hi Caroline, this books looks amazing :) I'm especially interested in the May Lindstrom range as I purchased 'The Problem Solver' a couple of weeks ago and was blown away. I did notice that she doesn't have a 'moisturiser' in her range however and wondered whether you thought the hydrating serum would be just as good as a final step in the routine? :) Love your work Caroline!!! :) Emily x

    1. Hi Emily

I use the blue cocoon as s moisturiser, it's beautiful. It's a balm that turns oily upon application and sinks in. I have oily skinsnd find it works well. A little goes a long way.

  9. Thanks for all the info on the products Caroline, it is really helpful! I have loved all of your previous boxes but think I am going to pass on this one. I still have the Oskia Exfoliating Balm from your first box with plenty left. I would have liked to try the MV Organics Cleanser but it's only the smaller 70ml size and not the larger 120ml - is this the reason the RRP of the box fell from what was said in the video?
The box is a lovely collection of cleansers for starting out!

  24. Fantastic box, cleansers to suit each mood, skin type, condition, plus making the "cleansing ritual" more fun than just one cleanser, I've brought the box, I don't wear eye make up but still if I'm cleansing the face why not the eyes too! The cleansing box is a great idea, it's the first step to clean good skin, I've used two products from this box and loved them, so for me personally this box gets a big thumbs up! can't wait for it to arrive! Excited xx

  25. Thanks for the excellent selection Caroline. The one thing I will not use is the exfoliating balm, but that will be a lovely gift for my sister who has very different skin. Good luck with the blog and thanks

  37. This collection isn't for me but I know lots of people will love it and it has been put together in your usual thoughtful way. Thanks Caroline and Cult Beauty and love the measured cool way you have responded to the moaning. Honestly people moan when they can't get a box and moan when it doesn't contain what they want. Let's all be grateful we are in a position to consider purchase at all. Remember the women forced to flee their homes with only the clothes they stand up in.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My goodness - honestly the sense of entitlement of some people never fails to amaze me. IF you don't like a product then don't buy it, simple, but please don't feel like you need to moan about it on here, no one want's that kind of negativity. You cannot expect that one box is going to suit 100% of people on here - that would be sorcery which, as much as I think Hirons is the bees knees when it comes to skincare, even she may struggle with! It is a themed box, big deal, many will love it many will hate it and some will be indifferent but my god don't get your knickers in a twist if there is one product which OMFG/horror of horror's is not what you would use, big deal, move on and buy what you do want and leave the people who want to buy this and are excited by said prospect to enjoy their purchase. It is insanely ungrateful and honestly comes across as really pathetic. Caroline, great job as always on securing a great discount once again on so many products - one can only imagine the delights that await in box number 5.... xxx

I am new to your blog and videos and have bought a bit of cleansers and Seth's on your recommendations. But I did not get the May Lindstrom spray when I ordered from her because I wasn't sure about it but was curious. I wanted the Tata Harper Cleansing oil during Sephora's sale but it was out of stock. I already use the Pixi balm, which is awesome! The way it works and the scent had me. A backup will be great. And to be able to try the other products is a bonus. Thank you for this box. If emails from a certain sender are categorized under the Promotions tab and you'd like too see them under the Primary tab, then just drag and drop an email from that sender onto your Primary tab. From that point on, all emails from that sender will be under the Primary tab.

I have been getting a lot of compliments on my skin and it is all due to you! Thank you!

I do have a quick question if you get the chance, I have just moved to Australia from the UK and I am desperately needing SPF protection on my face. Would you happen to have a recommendation for a good moisturiser containing SPF or just stand alone SPF? Would value fellow readers opinions too as I noticed a few Aussies on here :)

  60. Yikes. I have just had a quick glance through the comments and I am genuinely shocked to see complaints about this box. Cleansing is one of the most important parts of a skincare routine. It is all well and good slathering serums and oils on your face, but if you have not cleansed properly, it is pretty much useless.
This box focuses on cleansing and prepping the skin for what is to come next. This is a crucial step in your routine. If you love CH and this blog so much, surely you would understand that? I appreciate some may have their cleansers covered, and so won't need the box. But the complaints are bothering me, as it is just unnecessary.
I have 16 (excessive I know) cleansers next to my sink that I choose from depending on how my skin feels. Yes, I am a skincare obsessive, and yes, I bought this box within 3 seconds of it going on sale, but that is because I see the huge benefit. 1, I understand the importance of cleansing the skin properly. 2, I can gift anything I already have (Oskia) to my friend. 3, I get to try products that have been on my wishlist for a while, at a discounted price. 4, It makes me outrageously happy!
People, please, Caroline is forever trying to please everyone. She has created 4 incredible boxes and this one is amazing. Back off with the box bashing ;)

  63. I am thrilled to bits with this selection! You can't please everyone, but my god you've pleased me. Lol. Box arrived today, I've tried everything and spent the evening playing nicely with the pretty pots and boxes. May Lindstrom spritz is outstanding. Dead chuffed. Thanks Caroline.

  64. Oh my good lord! I am writing this to you from New Zealand (first time commenter!) where I have been checking my mailbox everyday to see if my beauty box has arrived. Today ... it did. As I type, I am shrouded in a mist of jasmine goodness and I couldn't be more excited. So, thank you for introducing all these gorgeous products into my life. I can't wait to try them.!

My youngest child has been sick recently and i found myself prone on the sofa with the laptop to hand and my daughter lying down my body. You were an excellent companion during this time, so while I'm at it, thanks for that too!

  67. Hi Caroline, I just discovered your blog and your videos on youtube recently and I have been binge watching them. Thank you for creating this platform its been so useful for me. You answer so many important questions and I feel like my skin is getting on track, as I've been applying what I learn on your blog(I have always had acne). I used to be so super restrictive with my skin and so paranoid that I would break out that I was missing out on all the amazing skincare out there. I missed the cult beauty box but I look forward to your next one :-) Thank you for being a 'skinspiration' Lol.
